Four-day work week?

At least, this is the opinion expressed by a famous British doctor (Professor John Ashton, whose name may not say much in our area). I should also note that he expressed such a professional opinion, specifically by studying the current state of the British people, so I can say right from the start that this opinion should be of interest to hardworking, perhaps even overly hardworking societies.

Well, as the doctor says, by reducing the work-week from five to four days, not only stress will decrease, time spent with the family will increase, but unemployment will also decrease. The doctor claims that not only will health problems such as high blood pressure be solved, but also, according to him, mental problems that are not only related to having too much work, but also to the lack of work will be solved.

"When you look at how we live our lives, the stress under which people work, the pressure of deadlines and absences due to illness, the mental problems caused by work are becoming more serious. We need a four-day work week, because there is an uneven distribution of working time in the world: one part of the population works too much, and the other part does not even have a job," says Prof. Ashton:

The professor makes another important point, namely that we have even sacrificed our lunch time. Many people eat their sandwich right at their desks, in front of their computers, continuing to work.

By the way, if you still think that this is just another conclusion from some doctor, I should mention that the professor heads the British Public Health Service (this is something like an association) consisting of 3,300 experts in the field of health in Britain. The latter conduct research on issues such as obesity, alcohol abuse, smoking, their connection with poverty, unemployment, and also work to reduce health inequalities between the rich and the poor. And the professor himself is trying to use his three-year presidency to raise awareness among mental health problems, in particular, problems such as anxiety, depression, which cause a number of health problems.

As for the working hours of the British, they have the longest in Europe.

A YouGov survey in April found that 57% of workers were in favour of a four-day working week, and 71% thought it would make Britain a much happier place. The professor said it could lead to more smiles, which would improve overall health.
